What is breathalyzer calibration?

Breathalyzers calibration is a control and optimization process that involves verifying the device’s results against those provided by a standard unit of measurement. This is performed using appropriate ethanol standards and specialized devices—exhalation simulators. During breathalyzers calibration, the sensor is adjusted to accurately indicate the alcohol content in exhaled air.

How often should a breathalyzer be calibrated?

A breathalyzer is a measuring device that requires periodic calibration. This is crucial because it ensures accurate readings. It also ensures the breathalyzer’s functionality and protects the sensor from damage. Regular calibration of breathalyzers ensures that repairs are rarely required. Each device has a unique calibration interval based on its design and intended use. Each breathalyzer comes with instructions containing detailed information on the calibration frequency. Typically, breathalyzers with semiconductor sensors should be calibrated every 6 months or every 200 tests, while breathalyzers with electrochemical sensors should be calibrated every 12 months or every 500 tests.

Why does my breathalyzer get out of calibration?

Every breathalyzer decalibrates during use, and its properties change over time. This occurs naturally or as a result of unfavorable external factors, such as excessively high or low temperatures, humidity, or dust. The method and intensity of use, as well as the way the device is stored, also influences breathalyzer decalibration.

What is an exhaust simulator?

An exhalation simulator is a device that simulates exhaled breath at a specific alcohol content. The sample generated by the simulator reliably reproduces the conditions encountered during a real breathalyzer reading. Exhalation simulators have the same humidity and temperature as the air actually exhaled by a human. They are capable of simulating a person with a specific alcohol content in their breath. The exhalation simulator is also periodically calibrated every 12 months.
